Who’s Who: Harris Family in England and New Zealand
The Harris, Rendel, Hobson, Eliot, Dobson, Court, Murray, Hill and Paddon families are connected by marriage. There are strong associations with Plymouth, England and thus to New Zealand from 1840 onward. Second and subsequent generation names to look out for are (NZ) Moore, Hobbs, Weyergang, Briant, Jeffery, Silcock and (UK) Jones, Fowler.

*Faith Weyergang (1917-2002), married Cyril Keith Silcock (1915-1977), RNZAF and airline officer, in 1941.

*Richard Alexander R Silcock (1944), photographer, born in England. Married Victoria Catherine xx. Richard Silcock could be the Auckland cousin who remembers visiting the Jeffery’s Mt Albert home and seeing Michael’s drawings of horses. ‘A cousin recalls him being infatuated with horses, and drawing them from an early age. “I remember as a child playing at his parents’ house and thumbing through his collection of sketch books filled with images of horses, all named with their owner, trainer and jockey, and with their colours noted. He learnt about colour and light from our grandmother, who was a landscape water colourist who exhibited widely throughout New Zealand.”’ (Michael Jeffery obituary, 2013). Grandmother is Constance Weyergang, whose work is in collections in New Plymouth and elsewhere. Faith and Keith Silcock lived in Auckland from around 1949. By 1954 they were living in Mt Albert, near the Jefferys. By 1963 the Silcocks were living in Sandringham, Victoria, and by 1977 (the year Keith died) Faith was living in Double Bay, Sydney. She returned to NZ and the following year she was living in Waikanae, where she died in 2002.
